Quinta da Barracuda
The complex is located just off the Main Strip in Albufeira. Despite its proximity to all the action, it remains quiet and peaceful day and night. A special access gate leads onto a 3-minute path down to the nearest beach "Praia dos Alemães".
The Main Strip
Colloquially known in Portuguese as "Rua dos Bares" ("Bar Avenue") it is the place to be in the evening when looking for that after-meal digestive or a more ambitious sojourn through the long night. In the daytime, there is still plenty on offer with a litany of knick-knack shops, lunch menus and on-tap refreshments.
The Old Town
The Old Town is Albufeira´s older centre. It conjoins in the main square (pictured above) where many bars and restaurants and quirky shops are in business. It is completely pedestrianised, making it the perfect place for morning and afternoon strolls and taking in the very typically "Algarvian" architecture.
The "Mercado Municipal dos Caliços" is the local fruit, vegetables and fish market located near Albufeira Bus Station. It operates Mon-Sat 8.00-14.00 and, on every 4th Saturday of the month, an antiques market sets up in the parking area. Also nearby, on the other side of the Bus Station, the local "Gypsy" Market takes place every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month.
Albufeira Shopping is the local shopping centre with a large supermarket on the ground floor and a series of clothes and electronics stores below and a varied food-court. Alternatively, for a more in-depth shopping experience, Algarve Shopping (algarveshopping.pt) is the place to go. There you will find numerous recognisable brands and retail chains.
Throughout the Old Town and the Main Strip there are bountiful dining options and, generally, these are reliable. Yet, for more authentic Albufeira and Portuguese gastronomic adventures, we would like to recommend three of our favourite places, in ascending order of price:
Snack Bar "O Jorge" at Bellavista, "Watches Roundabout";
Memórias at Valemangude (restaurantememorias.com)
112 is the European-standardised Emergency Number. It is the equivalent to the UK's 999, and used to call Ambulances, Fire Rescue, Sea Rescue and so on.
Just around the corner from Quinta da Barracuda, heading towards the Main Strip, is The International Health Centre (internationalhealthcentres.com) where vastly experienced English-speaking doctors and nurses are available to deal with your less urgent Health needs.
